About Mamahuhu

Mamahuhu is a small Chinese-American restaurant group from San Francisco. Its Palo Alto branch sits in Town & Country Village on El Camino Real. The company announced the location on its home page as its newest restaurant. It joins two San Francisco restaurants, on Clement Street in the Inner Richmond and on 24th Street in Noe Valley, plus one in Mill Valley.

The group was started by three friends who missed the Chinese-American food they grew up eating. One of them is chef Brandon Jew, whom the company describes as a James Beard Award winning, Michelin-starred chef known for Mister Jiu's in San Francisco. The other two, Ben and Anmao, had been building what the company calls Shanghai's first organic grocer. Mamahuhu describes its food as Chinese-American cooking made with ingredients it is proud of. Its values page talks about honoring the elders who built Chinese-American cooking while adding fresh takes on the classics.

The menu covers the takeout classics many Americans know, cooked with what the restaurant describes as mostly organic and locally sourced ingredients. The website names Sweet & Sour Chicken, chow mein, boba tea and dairy-free soft serve sundaes among its staples. A separate Palo Alto menu is posted as a download on the website, along with allergen information, so check it for the dishes served at this location.

Sourcing gets a lot of attention. The company says it is devoted to organically grown local produce and transparently raised animals. It profiles its suppliers on a collaborators page. For its potstickers, for example, it names organic tofu from Hodo in Oakland and organic heritage pork from duBreton.

Shared plates are the point. Mamahuhu calls its dishes meals made to be shared and describes family style eating as part of its identity. Ordering a few mains and sides for the table is the easiest approach for a group.

Vegetarian, vegan and allergy notes

Mamahuhu publishes more detail on dietary needs than most quick restaurants. It says the menu is designed to be vegetable-forward. Every House Special except Lazi Chicken comes in two versions, one with meat and one without. Vegetarian items carry a carrot symbol and vegan items a circle.

Gluten is harder to avoid. Many dishes contain small amounts from soy sauce, black rice vinegar or bean paste. Dishes with a fully gluten-free recipe are marked GF, though cross-contact is possible. The restaurants do not use peanut oil. The fryers use organic palm oil, the wok station uses rice bran oil and the salad dressings use grapeseed oil. For specific allergens, the company suggests calling or asking in person.

The company also makes frozen potstickers with a wheat-free wrapper of rice and oat flour, which it sells through Bay Area retailers. Ask at the counter whether the Palo Alto restaurant has them in its freezer.

How to order

The Palo Alto restaurant is open every day for dine-in, takeout and delivery. You can call, order through the Mamahuhu website or use DoorDash or Uber Eats. Choose the Palo Alto location when you order online, since the group has four restaurants. Gift cards are sold through the website.

Catering covers office lunches, birthdays, graduations and other parties. The request form lists Palo Alto as a pickup point. Delivery is offered on orders over $300 for a 15 percent fee. Mamahuhu asks for 5 hours of notice, or 24 hours for orders of $500 or more. Orders can come as party trays or individual portions.
