About LuLu's

LuLu's is a small, family-owned group of Mexican restaurants on the Peninsula. The company's tagline, Comida Fresca, Salsa Caliente, translates to fresh food and hot salsa. That sums up the pitch. LuLu's says its story starts with family meals in Mexico in the early 1960s. The first restaurant, LuLu's on the Alameda in Menlo Park, opened in 2005.

The group now has four locations. Besides the original in Menlo Park, there is one on Laurel Street in San Carlos, one on Main Street in Los Altos and this one in Town & Country Village in Palo Alto, at 855 El Camino Real, Suite 49. The company describes its taquerias as committed to natural, locally sourced ingredients and home-style preparation. It also says it supports local farmers.

LuLu's publishes a separate menu for each location, so check the Town & Country menu on its website for the details. The catering page gives a good overview of the kitchen's range. It mentions eight all-natural meat choices, grilled fresh fish, shrimp, vegetables and vegetarian beans. There are three kinds of rice and a choice of flour, spinach, tomato, whole wheat and corn tortillas.

The Town & Country location opens at 9 a.m. every day. If you are hoping for an early meal, check that location's menu on the website first, since each branch posts its own. The company notes that gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options are available on its catering menu. Menus change, so confirm specific dishes before you go.

How to order

The locations page has buttons for ordering online for pickup and for delivery, plus a link to each branch's menu. Online ordering runs through Toast. You can also call the Town & Country Village restaurant at 650-327-8226.

Ordering ahead is the simplest way to save time at lunch. Each order page is tied to one location, so make sure you have picked Town & Country Village before you check out. Delivery is offered from the same page.

If you are choosing between branches, note that the hours differ. The Palo Alto and Menlo Park restaurants both list 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. The San Carlos and Los Altos branches close earlier on Sunday and from Monday to Wednesday. The Menlo Park original, on Alameda de las Pulgas, is the other branch to try if you live in west Menlo Park.

Catering and the taquiza cart

Catering is a big part of LuLu's business. The company says it has been catering for Silicon Valley corporate clients since it opened in 2005. It delivers to homes, offices and venues, with food arranged in catering tins that move easily to your own platters. Staff can deliver, set up, serve and clean up for corporate events.

For parties, LuLu's offers a taquiza package. A taquiza is an informal taco party where guests gather around the grill and build their own tacos. LuLu's supplies the raw ingredients, experienced cooks and a stainless steel propane taquiza cart delivered to your home or event. The catering team can be reached at 650-208-7626.

Who it suits

LuLu's fits a quick family meal at Town & Country, a takeout lunch for the office or a casual dinner on a busy weeknight. The center's mix of food counters makes it easy to split up and meet at a table, which suits groups who cannot agree on one cuisine. Stanford fans heading to games across El Camino Real may find it a handy place to eat beforehand, so plan a little extra time on those days.
