About Teaspoon

Teaspoon is a boba tea chain with a shop in Suite C at 2675 Middlefield Road, in the Midtown Shopping Center. The brand began as a single shop in Los Altos in 2015, aiming to serve modern boba tea that mixes traditional flavors with an American twist. It has since grown into a franchise with more than 70 shops on its store locator. Most are in California, but the list also reaches Texas, Nevada, Florida, New Jersey, Georgia, Alabama and Missouri.

Teaspoon says it is now owned by Next Bite Ventures, a private equity fund whose founding partners, Ahmed Farag and Hady Abou El Kheir, became the brand's first multi-unit franchise owners in 2022. The company frames its mission around making each cup a small source of joy and calls its work handcrafting experiences for everyone who walks in.

The Palo Alto shop has been part of Midtown for years. Palo Alto Online reported in 2017 that franchisee Jennifer Chao, whose brother-in-law founded Teaspoon, was remodeling a space toward the back of the shopping center. It had been home to Nature's Alley, a longtime floral shop that left in 2016. The shop soft-opened on September 3, 2017. At the time, the paper noted that tea was brewed to order and that drinks could be adjusted for temperature, milk, sweetness and toppings. Back then Teaspoon had only a handful of shops, in Los Altos, Mountain View, San Jose, Milpitas and San Francisco. The Midtown store opened as part of a push into more Peninsula cities, with Redwood City, San Mateo and Santa Clara also on the franchisee's list.

The current menu is organized into series. The classics include House Milk Tea, Liquid Gold, Classic Thai Tea, Creamy Jasmine, Taro Lover, Black Sugar Assam and Golden Assam. A Chai Signature Series adds Brown Sugar, Royal Chai, Cookie Butter and Lavender chai drinks, plus a hot Royal Chai Latte. In fall the menu adds pumpkin drinks such as a Pumpkin Masala Chai and a Pumpkin Spice Latte, along with a pumpkin spice foam you can add to other drinks.

The signature list leans into fruit and cream. It includes Grasshopper, Ladybug, Caramel Cream, Lychee on Lychee, Pineapple Shine, Silky Mango, Silky Strawberry, Matcha Royale, Guava Sunset and a custom-made lemonade. Smoothies include Strawberry Colada, Mango Funtime and Mango on Fire, which comes with chamoy and Tajin.

Teaspoon also has a coffee section with coconut coffee, a crème brûlée coffee, Vietnamese coffee, an ube Vietnamese coffee, a Vietnamese frappé and a double matcha coffee. Toppings and mix-ins named on the menu include honey boba, black sugar boba, lychee jelly, osmanthus jelly and several foams, among them sea salt, crème brûlée and ube coconut. Small pastries such as macarons in flavors like rose lychee and matcha, dessert bars and a Peruvian chocolate brownie fill out the counter. Some drinks can be ordered hot or iced. The coffees come in small or regular sizes.

Drinks for groups

Teaspoon sells two larger formats that are handy for a party or office meeting. The Party Pour holds 59 ounces, about five servings. It comes in a short list of flavors such as House Milk Tea, Taro Lover, Grasshopper, Ladybug and Vietnamese coffee. The Tea Traveler is a 2.5 liter box that serves 8 to 10 people. The company also runs a rewards program and a catering service through its website.

How to order

You can order at the counter or place an online order for the Palo Alto store through the ordering link on Teaspoon's store locator. The company publishes nutrition and allergen information on its website. If you have a dairy or nut allergy, check it before choosing a drink with cream, foam or a crumble topping. Teaspoon does not post store hours on its own site, so confirm them before a late visit.
