For a city of under 70,000 people, Palo Alto has a surprisingly deep theater scene. Most of it lives under one roof. The Lucie Stern Theatre on Middlefield Road is home to a Tony Award-winning professional company, a community troupe that dates to 1931, an opera company and the city's own children's theater. Add Stanford's student stages and a second professional house a few miles south in Mountain View and you can see live theater most weekends of the year.
This guide explains who performs where, what is on the 2026 to 2027 calendars as published by each company and how to plan an evening around a show. Seasons and dates come from the companies themselves. Always check their sites before you buy, since casting and dates can shift. For the bigger arts picture, start with our arts and culture hub.
The Lucie Stern Theatre
The Lucie Stern Community Center at 1305 Middlefield Road was built in the 1930s with support from Lucie Stern, a philanthropist who gave the city several of its best-loved buildings. Birge Clark, Palo Alto's most prolific architect, designed the complex in his Spanish Colonial Revival style. Look for the white stucco walls, red tile roofs, arcades and a courtyard that makes intermission feel like a garden party. Our guide to Palo Alto architecture has more on Clark's work.
The theater itself seats about 400. That size suits plays and chamber musicals well. Nobody sits far from the stage and you can see facial expressions from the back row. The building sits on the edge of Rinconada Park, with the Junior Museum and Zoo and the Palo Alto Art Center a short walk away. City parking lots surround the community center. Street parking fills the nearby blocks on busy nights.
TheatreWorks Silicon Valley
TheatreWorks Silicon Valley was founded in Palo Alto in 1970. It has grown into one of the leading regional theaters in the country and won the Regional Theatre Tony Award in 2019. The company is known for developing new musicals and new plays, often giving them their first or second production anywhere. Its offices are now in Redwood City, but it still performs in two homes: the Lucie Stern Theatre and the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts.
Season 56 (2026 to 2027)
The company announced its 56th season in February 2026. Here is the published lineup:

|---|---|---|
| The Employee Dharma Handbook (world premiere) | July 8 to August 2, 2026 | Lucie Stern Theatre |
| Dracula by Steven Dietz | October 7 to November 1, 2026 | Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts |

| Love Notes with Hershey Felder | January 9 to 31, 2027 | Fox Theatre, Redwood City |

| Beautiful: The Carole King Musical | March 31 to April 25, 2027 | Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts |
TheatreWorks also runs a New Works program with commissions, a writers group and a festival of readings. These are a good way to see shows in development for a modest price. Tickets are sold online and through the box office at 1-877-662-8978, which lists hours of Tuesday to Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. Subscribers get the best seats and prices.
Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts
TheatreWorks stages its larger musicals at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, 500 Castro Street. The center is part of Mountain View's civic center at the top of Castro Street, the restaurant row of downtown Mountain View. That makes dinner before the show easy. The Mountain View Caltrain and VTA light rail station sits at the other end of Castro Street, a walk of several blocks, so you can leave the car at home if you are staying near a station.
The drive from downtown Palo Alto takes about 15 minutes outside rush hour. If you plan to make a weekend of it, our guide to staying in Menlo Park or Mountain View covers hotels near Castro Street.
Palo Alto Players
Palo Alto Players was founded in 1931 and calls itself the Peninsula's first theater company. It is a community theater with professional production values, staging popular musicals, comedies and dramas at the Lucie Stern. Its 96th season runs from September 2026 to June 2027:
- A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, September 12 to 27, 2026 (already closed)
- The Addams Family, October 31 to November 15, 2026, with a preview on October 30
- Clue, January 16 to 31, 2027
- Disney's Mary Poppins, April 24 to May 9, 2027
- On Golden Pond, which closes the season in June 2027
Players shows tend to be family friendly and sell well on weekends. Book Saturday evenings early, especially for the spring musical.
West Bay Opera
West Bay Opera brings full opera productions, with orchestra and chorus, to the Lucie Stern's 400 seats. Hearing grand opera in a hall this size is unusual and a big part of the appeal. The company is in its 71st season in 2026 to 2027. Mozart's The Abduction from the Seraglio opened the season in October. Verdi's Don Carlos plays February 12, 14, 20 and 21, 2027. Puccini's Turandot closes the season on May 21, 23, 29 and 30, 2027. Each production gets only four performances, so popular titles sell out.
Palo Alto Children's Theatre
The Palo Alto Children's Theatre is run by the city from the same 1305 Middlefield Road address. It offers classes, camps and productions for young people from age 3 through high school and says it serves more than 57,000 community members each year. It also takes theater into schools, with outreach productions for grades 3 to 5 and dance classes for younger students.
Two kinds of shows are open to the public. Main Stage productions feature young actors in full-length shows. In December 2026 that means A Year with Frog and Toad, opening December 3. The Playhouse Series offers short storytelling shows with simple sets for children ages 2 to 6. Little Red Riding Hood opens November 21, 2026 and The Gingerbread Man opens December 19. Tickets are sold online, with child and adult prices. The box office lists hours of Wednesday to Saturday, 2 to 6 p.m., plus an hour before each show. For more ideas for young visitors, see Palo Alto with kids.
Stanford stages
Stanford adds a second, younger theater scene. The Ram's Head Theatrical Society was formed on September 13, 1911 and staged its first Gaieties two months later. It still produces three shows a year:
- Big Game Gaieties in the fall, an original student-written musical comedy timed to Big Game week. The 2026 edition is listed for November 18.
- A winter show, a new collaborative work in a smaller space such as the Pigott Theater or the Nitery.
- A spring musical, a licensed Broadway show in Memorial Auditorium, which seats about 1,700. Recent titles include Legally Blonde in 2025 and Grease in April 2026.
Stanford's Theater and Performance Studies department also stages student and faculty productions during the academic year. Stanford Live, the university's presenter, books dance and theater as well as music. Its 2027 calendar includes the Japanese drum ensemble Kodo in Memorial Auditorium on January 20 and Camille A. Brown and Dancers on March 17. Parking on campus is paid on weekdays, so read our visiting Stanford guide before you drive.
Good to know
- The Lucie Stern hosts several companies, so check that your ticket matches the right company and date.

- TheatreWorks offers a different experience in each venue: intimate plays at the Lucie Stern, bigger musicals in Mountain View.
- Prices vary by company and seat. We do not list them here because they change by show.
Planning a theater night
Downtown Palo Alto is the easiest place to eat before a Lucie Stern show. University Avenue and its side streets are a short drive or bike ride away. Our food and drink guide lists options at every price. For Mountain View shows, Castro Street restaurants are steps from the theater. If you want music instead of drama on another night, our live music guide covers Bing Concert Hall and Frost Amphitheater. Visitors staying overnight can compare hotels near downtown Palo Alto and walk to dinner.
One last tip: the companies here sell many seats through subscriptions. If a show you want looks sold out, call the box office. Returned subscriber tickets often come back on sale in the final week.
